Fibromyalgia is one of the most common chronic pain conditions that young women in college, such as myself, are at risk for. The National Fibromyalgia Association explained that patients diagnosed with this disorder are usually between the ages of 20 and 50, although the incidence rises as people age.

The Mayo Clinic explained that patients suffering from the disorder have “a constant dull ache, typically arising from muscles. To be considered widespread, the pain must occur on both sides of your body and above and below your waist.”

Although doctors aren’t sure what causes the disorder, several suspected factors include genetics, infections, and physical or emotional trauma, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases said, “Scientists estimate that fibromyalgia affects 5 million Americans 18 or older. Between 80 and 90 percent of people diagnosed with fibromyalgia are women.”

TheĀ Cleveland Clinic said that because there is not way to prevent fibromyalgia, the only thing a person can do is exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle, like eating right and exercising frequently. Treatment options include acupuncture, physical therapy, therapeutic massage, and a gentle exercise program.

The American Academy Family of Physicians has a more detailed diagram of tender spots to look for in a patient who might have fibromyalgia, pictured below.

Although the disorder cannot be prevented and not much is known of causes related to the disorder, it is still a good idea to keep yourself informed as well as to try to live as healthy a lifestyle as you can.
